Omkareshwar Jyotirling Temple

12 Jyotirlinga Tour Packages: Omkareshwar Jyotirling Temple

Omkareshwar, also known as Mandhata Omkareshwar, holds a significant position among the twelve Jyotirlingas, symbolizing the luminous physical manifestation of Lord Shiva in Hinduism. The sacred island of Omkareshwar, shaped like the revered Hindu symbol 'Om,' has attracted pilgrims for countless generations. Located at the junction of the Narmada and Kaveri rivers, devotees gather here to offer their reverence to the Jyotirlinga housed in the temple of Shri Omkar Mandhata. This holy site in Madhya Pradesh showcases the harmonious blend of natural splendor and magnificent human craftsmanship, creating an awe-inspiring ambiance.

The island is characterized by two towering hills, separated by a valley that forms the shape of the sacred 'Om' symbol when viewed from above. Nestled between the steep hills of the Vindhya range to the north and the Satpura range to the south, the Narmada River creates a tranquil deep pool. In ancient times, this pool teemed with alligators and fish, which were remarkably tame and would accept grains from human hands. The collection now lies 270 feet below the cantilever bridge constructed in 1979, adding to the picturesque allure of the location.

One of the significant activities to undertake during an Omkareshwar tour is the Omkareswar Kshetra Parikrama. This circumambulation begins at the Omkareswar temple and proceeds around the hill. Adi Shankaracharya performed this parikrama when he visited the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, where he encountered his Guru, Sri Govindapada, and received teachings on Advaita philosophy. The endpoint of the parikrama offers a glimpse of this sacred spot, located near the Omkareswar temple.

The journey begins at the Triveni Sangamam, where pilgrims can take a holy bath. Adjacent to the Triveni Sangamam is the temple of Runa Mukteswar, where devotees offer red gram to Lord Shiva. The path then leads through a serene forest, particularly enchanting during winter. Upon crossing the forest, one arrives at the Bholenath temple at the parikrama's midpoint. The temple houses a large Narmada banam-made Shiva Linga. The Durga Goddess temple awaits further, followed by entry into a dense forest area housing ancient monuments and temples under the purview of the Indian Archaeological Department.

Along the parikrama route, one encounters numerous Sadhus from various traditions. With luck, one may spot deer and peacocks along the way. The view of the Narmada River, adorned with bridges and the project, adds to the breathtaking beauty of the surroundings. The final stop is the cave of Guru Govindapada, culminating in a fulfilling parikrama experience. It is believed that King Mandhatha of the Ishvaku clan worshipped Shiva at this sacred site. Additionally, it is said that Govinda Bhagavatpaada, the Guru of Shankaracharya, resided in a cave here.

Places to visit

The temple stands on a one mile long, half mile wide island formed by the fork of the Narmada. The soft stone of which it was constructed has lent its pliable surface to a rare degree of detailed work, of which the frieze figures on the upper portion are the most striking. Also intricately carved is the stone roof of the temple. Encircling the shrine are verandahs with columns which are carved in circles, polygons and squares.

Another popular legend says that once upon a time Vidhya Parvat practiced severe penance and worshipped Parthivarchana along with Lord Omkareshwar for nearly six months. As a result Lord Shiva was pleased and blessed him with the desire boon. On the sincere request of all the gods and the sages Lord Shiva made two parts of the lings. One half being Omkareshwara and the other Amaleshwara or Amareshwar.

A classic example of early medieval Brahminic architecture, this one is well worth a visit. Its most eye-catching feature is a frieze of elephants over 1.5m high carved on a stone slab at its outer perimeter. Elaborate carved figures decorate the upper portion and the roof of the temple. The shrine is encircled by verandahs with columns carved in circles, polygons and squares.
